From The Sublime to The (Not) Ridiculous and Back Again
TODAY'S RAMBLINGS
1 Minute Read
Perhaps you’d like to do some shopping, midweek. No problem, and there are no affiliate links in what follows.
And no curlers in my hair, either.
A Reading Light That Doesn’t Suck
OK, no offense if you use this style, but let’s face it: They don’t work very well.
They don’t stay put and fall off too easily. And when it doesn’t, it’s always in the way when I turn pages.
Here’s the answer, and I must give credit where it is due. I used one of Ol’ Purple Label’s and loved it so much that I bought one for myself immediately. And then one for Julie - because, after all: It’s partner-friendly!
Bogus advertising aside, they work great, are comfy, and are also something you can use camping - and not just for reading in your tent. It’s currently $18 at Dear Leader’s new favorite online store.
Leather Upholstery Restoration Kit
It’s not ridiculous not to want to spend thousands replacing a couch with plenty of life left in it, apart from the leather showing its age. Especially when you spend most of your waking hours sitting on it, typing blogs and novels.
I was expecting this not to work; I was wrong.
It’s $27 at you-know-where.
An Umbrella That Can Handle SF
We’re having a fine and normal winter here in San Francisco. That of course means driving rain that can fall sideways, thanks to our gentle ocean breezes gale-force coastal winds. It all means you better have a real umbrella.
Well, I have two, but one is too large for travel. I wanted one that offers the brick shithouse-levels of sturdiness of a proper English brolly, yet in a jet set-ready form factor. Here it is, and at $30, it’s a steal.
FROM THE UNWASHED MASSES
On to some virtue signaling and not-so-humble bragging by yours truly.
And yes, that was a disclaimer.
Recently, I began participating with an organization called SCORE, a part of the Small Business Administration chartered with mentoring aspiring entrepreneurs. That’s not the virtue signaling. Rather, it’s about what happened when I shared with the region’s directors a summary of my entrepreneurial experiences, which I published in 2022.
One of the directors is a Professor Emeritus from the business school at the California State University at Sonoma. He read it, and here was his response.
I finally got around to reading your excellent little book, On Entrepreneurship. You have some intriguing information and thoughtful lessons.
Would you be willing to talk about your book on Thursday at our Chapter meeting? I think what you have to say is so important.
Portico Darwin readership: That does not translate into the ability to write a novel. Or frankly, much else.
My snide answer is a preview of Chapter 2 of Ride of Your Life.
It couldn’t go on and Ben Jr was going to give Eli a most expensive gift as part of a plan to straighten him up. And keep him quiet.
Thank you for reading this newsletter.
KLUF
I just played the album, but this song is a must today.
